Watercolorist Jennie Szaltis followed her calling as an artist from Columbus, Mississippi where she received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Mississippi University for Women, to Pensacola, Florida where she worked in Interior Design, her major field of study at MUW. While in Pensacola, she met and married her husband, Ray.
Her journey led her to Jacksonville, Florida where she further developed her talent with course work in visual arts at Jacksonville University, and began to sell her work in local galleries.
From 1994 to 2007 she and her husband owned Studios for Creating, a Visual Arts School in the Lakewood area of Jacksonville where she taught watercolor and drawing.
Her process varies from that of a traditional watercolorist. While Jennie enjoys painting on paper, it would not be uncommon to find her applying her watercolors to canvas or even shedding and weaving them.
In 2005, Jennie began painting watercolor on canvas after being influenced by David Daniels. Although not popular at the time, she continued to experiment, and became a forerunner in its use. After painting watercolor on canvas for 6 years Jennie has adapted watercolor on canvas as her primary technique. Although she continues to enjoy painting on paper she comments ” Watercolor on canvas is just different than painting on paper, just as yupo (painting on thin sheets of plastic) produces an incredible effect, it is just a different surface to watercolor on.
Jennie is a very traditional watercolorist using transparent watercolor medium with the surface of her canvas as white.
Her artwork may be seen at Trends Home Decor on Hendricks Avenue in Jacksonville, FL.
